    Notes
    • David Tanner appears to have served in the Revolutionary War. We know from the application of his son Nathan's widow for a pension that David was in New York during the revolution, and G.C. Tanner wrote "In New York in the Revolution, James A. Roberts, 1898, is the following: "Albany County Militia (Land Bounty Rights) Thirteenth Regiment, Capt. Peter Van Vort, Enlisted Men, Tanner, David." As all the men who served in New York regiments were Rhode Island born men, with one or two exceptions accounted for, this David Tanner was most likely David of Hopkinton, son of Nathan Tanner, Sr." [1, 4]
    • Since David's son David was born in Hopkinton in 1780, it appears that David returned to Rhode Island after the war.
