    Notes
    • It is not certain that Ruth was the mother of all of the children named in the will of Thomas 2nd, as the number and names of the wives of Thomas 2nd are unclear. Other young children were mentioned but not named in Thomas's will. [2]

    Notes
    • I have found no record of this marriage. We know of it because Sarah's death record in the Barbour Collection for Groton says "Sarah, 2d, w. of Thomas, d. Mar. 4, 1762". It is more likely that Sarah was the second wife of Thomas 3rd, whose first wife Jane Willea died in 1754, than she was the second wife of Thomas 2nd who died in 1709. I have assumed Thomas 4th was living in Voluntown in 1762 as he was in 1764, and, therefore, if Sarah had been the wife of Thomas 4th, her death would have been recorded in Voluntown rather than Groton. Notes
    • Numerous family trees online state that Thomas 2nd married Rachel Dodge and that Thomas 3rd was their son. I have found no documentation for this marriage to date. It is notable that some of these trees said Thomas 2nd and Rachel were married 2 Oct 1672. However, on 2 Oct 1762 Thomas Baley of Groton married Rachel Dodge of Pomfret, Connecticut at Abington Congregational Church in Pomfret. The 1672 date is doubtless a mistranscription of 2 Oct 1762. Also, the 1672 date is unreasonable as Thomas 2nd would have been only 13 or 14 years old in that year. (Note that Abington Church records did not begin until 1749.)

That Thomas 3rd married Rachel Dodge is supported by his will which says "I give to my loving wife Rachel Baley".

Abington Church records say that Rachel was a widow. [1, 6]
