DEATH OF CHARLES LEE MOURNED BY MANY.
The body of Charles Lee was interred in the Floral Hill cemetery in Neponset Sunday afternoon and the burial service being in charge of Neponset Lodge, A.F. & A.M., No. 803, Worshipful Master, Henry D. Wolff, of Dwight, Ill., was the master of ceremonies. The body arrived on the 3:23 train Sunday afternoon and the remains were accompanied from Dwight by the following persons: Mrs. Chas. H. Lee, Mr. and Mrs. R.S. Ludington, Henry D. Wolff, V.S. Wright, Roy M. Baker and Charles Ring, the latter being conductor of the ill-fated train upon which Mr. Lee was fatally injured last Wednesday.
The accident occurred near Peoria when two trains crashed together through a misinterpretation of train orders and several persons were fatally injured. Mr. Lee received several bruises about the head and was internally injured, but was conscious until a short time before his death in a Peoria hospital Friday morning.
Charles Henry Lee was born in West Bloomfield, New York, October 1st, 1851. His parents were Myron H. Lee and Orissa Mann Lee. He was the oldest child and only son. At the age of two years he was brought to Illinois by his parents and he has resided in this state ever since. His boyhood was spent at Neponset, Bureau County, Illinois, where his remains were laid to rest by the side of his mother and sister who have preceded him.
At and early age he became an efficient telegraph operator and before his majority entered into a life work of railroading. He was connected with the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad until he entered the service of the Chicago & Alton Railway some nineteen years ago. He has efficiently filled many positions of trust and responsibility in his various positions. One of his superiors said of him after the accident that Charles Lee was one of the most willing and faithful and honest men he knew. His good nature and kindly disposition made him universally popular with all who knew him.
In 1893 Mr. Lee was united in marriage with Abby S. Battise, who survives him as his widow. Mr. Lee's father (now 88 years of age) also survives his son as the last member of his family. The deceased resided in Dwight for the last ten years and his sudden, unexpected death has caused a shock and will mean a personal loss to all his friends and acquaintances. Mr. Lee was a Mason, being a member of Livingston Lodge No. 371. He was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star of Dwight and of the Modern Woodmen of America, and of the Knight's of Pythias of Bloomington.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday at 3:30 p.m., at the home on Seminole street. The religious service by Rev. W.J. Drew was followed by the ritualistic and fraternal service of Livingston Lodge.
