Family Knapp, Flora Frances, b. 7 Jul 1843, Battle Creek, Calhoun, Michigan, USA d. 3 Mar 1918, Minneapolis, Hennepin, Minnesota, USA (Age 74 years) Marriage 4 Oct 1867 Rockland, Manitowoc, Wisconsin [12] - Lycurgus and Flora were married in Clarks Mills by Thomas B. Dooley, who was the pastor at St. James Episcopal Church in Manitowoc. Dooley did not register the marriage until 5 March 1869, 17 months after the event. By that time he did not remember Lycurgus' and Flora's first names. He also gave the bride's mother's name as Mary (a sister) rather than Hannah. He did name the witness as Angeline Knapp, one of Flora's sisters. Angeline was married about a month after Flora, and Dooley also recorded her mother's name as Mary rather than Hannah.
Dooley registered 17 other marriages the same day. The earliest was performed 13 Dec 1866, almost two years and four months before he registered it. He did not record the marriage date for one of them.
Dooley came to Manitowoc from Michigan about 1865 and returned to Michigan in 1870. He is identified as F. B Dooley in "A History of Manitowoc County" by Ralph G. Plumb.

Notes - L. Frederick Martin wrote" They farmed in Benton County, Minnesota (when they went there I do not know) but Aunt Maud writes that the family moved from the farm to nearby Rice, Minnesota in the spring of 1884 (where he bought & operated a hotel). She writes "we children were growing up (on the farm) without the advantages of schooling - poor teachers 3 months in the year - I remember that first day of school. I could knit the family stockings & piece a quilt, but the 3 R's not so good."
In the 1880 US census the family was living in Buckman, Morrison, Minnesota. Lycurgus was listed as Syrus. Flora, Maud and Blanche are listed correctly, but the first son is called Albert (Alfred) and the second son is called Frank and is 8 years old. The latter would have been Jira who was called Kenneth or Ken later in life. One wonders about the confusion in the boys' names. Who answered the census taker's questions?
Maud Latham wrote they moved to Rice (Benton County) in 1884, and consistent with this, the family was living in Langola Township, Benton County in 1885 (Minnesota Census). Part of the present City of Rice is in Langola Township. [The Langola location is taken from the Ancestry.com index, as the location in blurred out in the image of the census record.]
In 1895 Lycurgus, Flora, Maud and Blanche were living in St. Cloud, Minnesota. His occupation was "collector" (1895 Minnesota Census). As Maud graduated from St. Cloud Normal School in May, 1896, perhaps the family had moved there to support Maud during her studies. In the 1895 Minnesota Census, Lycurgus is also listed as living with J. K. Martin in Rice, Benton.
About 1900 Lycurgus and Flora moved from Minnesota to join their son Alfred who was living in Sentinel Butte, in the far western part of North Dakota. Lycurgus was listed in two places in the 1900 US Census. He was in Sentinel Butte with son Alfred and his wife Julia; he listed himself as a hotel keeper. Alfred's occupation was merchant. He was also listed in Royalton, Minnesota where Flora was living with her daughter Maud, son Ken (Jira) and Ken's new wife Lottie.
In the 1910 census, Lycurgus is listed as retired and is living with Flora in Billings Co, North Dakota. Alfred Lycurgus is listed as a rancher in separate household. His wife Julia is listed as a merchant running a general store and there is a son Alfred L.
The railroad ran through Little Falls and Sentinel Butte, so it would have been an easy train ride between the two towns.
After Lycurgus died, Flora moved to Minneapolis and lived with her daughter Maud until her death in March 1918. [2, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23]
