Family Martin, Lycurgus Fargo, b. 27 Jun 1841, Blenheim, Oxford, Ontario, Canada d. 16 Sep 1910, Sentinel Butte, Billings, North Dakota, USA (Age 69 years) Marriage 4 Oct 1867 Rockland, Manitowoc, Wisconsin [5] - Lycurgus and Flora were married in Clarks Mills by Thomas B. Dooley, who was the pastor at St. James Episcopal Church in Manitowoc. Dooley did not register the marriage until 5 March 1869, 17 months after the event. By that time he did not remember Lycurgus' and Flora's first names. He also gave the bride's mother's name as Mary (a sister) rather than Hannah. He did name the witness as Angeline Knapp, one of Flora's sisters. Angeline was married about a month after Flora, and Dooley also recorded her mother's name as Mary rather than Hannah.
Dooley registered 17 other marriages the same day. The earliest was performed 13 Dec 1866, almost two years and four months before he registered it. He did not record the marriage date for one of them.
Dooley came to Manitowoc from Michigan about 1865 and returned to Michigan in 1870. He is identified as F. B Dooley in "A History of Manitowoc County" by Ralph G. Plumb.

Photos Martin, Flora F. Martin, Flora Knapp
Flora mailed this photo from Los Angeles to her grandson Kenneth when he was ill. She wrote on the back: "My Dear Little Sufferer, I have come to see you and brought my cow. I hope you will be glad to see her -- I hope you soon be well and able to return this visit some time this winter. I would be so glad to see you. Lovingly Grandma Martin

Notes - Flora's birth year is most likely 1843. The date on her gravestone in Little Falls is 1843, but some family records say 1844. Flora is found at two locations in the 1860 US Census, and her age in them is ambiguous. First, she is 16 years old living in Rockland, Manitowoc, Wisconsin with her father, mother and siblings; second she is a 17 year old school teacher living with a family in Eaton, Manitowoc. This discrepancy may have resulted from confusion arising from Flora's birthday (July 7), the official date of the Census (June 1) and the dates the actual Censuses were taken (August). If Flora's birth year was 1843, she would have been 16 on June 1 and 17 in August.
After Lycurgus died in North Dakota, Flora moved to Minneapolis where her daughter Maud was teaching school and lived there until she died.
Flora's sister Selina belonged to the Methodist-Episcopal Church of Mayfield, Montgomery, New York. Her husband Lycurgus was listed as Church of England in the 1851 Canadian Census. Flora's brother Arthur D. Knapp was a Presbyterian (see his biosketch). [6, 7, 8] - She is listed as Flora Franier Martin in the death certificate index at the Minnesota Historical Society. At the time of her death she was living in Ward 8 in Minneapolis, which is where her daughter Maud was living.
