Histories of the Martin, Wilson, Bloom, & Ahola Families
Martin, Walter Hyde[1, 2]
1806 - 1881 (75 years)-
Name Martin, Walter Hyde - Presumably named for his maternal great-grandfather Walter Hyde, who died in the Revolutionary War.
Birth 1806 USA - Walter's birthplace is unclear. His birthplace was listed as New York in the 1900 US Census for his children Elizabeth (and Zerviah, who was in the same household), Cleoden and Alfred, but as Vermont by Lycurgus. His grandson Walter Gaynor also gave Walter's birthplace as Vermont on Zerviah Martin Gaynor's death certificate. Some sources give his birthplace as Claverack, Columbia, New York. Claverack may have been inferred from Walworth's Hyde Genealogy which stated that Walter's parents moved from Claverack to Bainbridge, New York in 1806. If that is true, Walter may have been born in Bainbridge or nearby Afton, New York.
Gender Male Living 1851 Blenheim, Oxford , Ontario, Canada [3, 4] Walter was farming 150 acres on Concession 1, lot 9. Forty-five acres were cultivated and 69 in pasture. He had 15 cattle, 23 sheep and 9 pigs. Living 1861 Blenheim, Oxford , Ontario, Canada [5] Walter's household included his wife Ann, his sons Lycurgus, Cleoden and Jira, his daughter Zerviah Gaynor and her son Walter. Land 1862 - 1863 Lot 12, Concession 1 , Blenheim, Oxford, Ontario, Canada [6] Owned concession 1, lot 12. Living 1871 Burford, Brant, Ontario, Canada [7] Living with Joseph Martin and his family. This Joseph appears to be Walter's younger brother. Living 1881 Parkdale, York West, Ontario, Canada [8] Walter (age 75) was living with his daughter Zerviah Gaynor (43) in his grandson Walter Gaynor's (age 23, a pharmacist) household. Death 30 Jul 1881 Woodstock, , Ontario, Canada [1, 9] Burial Princeton Cemetery, Princeton, Oxford, Ontario, Canada Person ID I23 Martin-Bloom Last Modified 17 Sep 2019
Father Martin, Earl, b. 15 Jun 1780 d. 1 Aug 1837, Brantford, Canada West, Canada (Age 57 years) Mother Hyde, Zerviah, b. 24 Aug 1784, Lebanon, Connecticut d. 31 Jan 1858, Blenheim, Oxford, Canada West, Canada (Age 73 years) Marriage 25 Dec 1804 Claverack, Columbia, New York [11, 12, 13] - Earl and Zerviah may have become acquainted between 1795 and 1800 when Zerviah's family was living in Middleburgh, Schoharie County, New York and Earl's family was living in nearby Rensselaerville, Albany County. Zerviah's brother Elijah was reportedly born in Claverack in 1801, and Walworth wrote that Daniel and his family moved to Bainbridge in 1806. Note that the Afton Enterprise article (see notes under Daniel Hyde) says that Daniel moved to Bainbridge in 1801. But this seems unlikely given Zerviah's marriage in Claverack at the end of 1804. Notes - Gravestone includes the following: "Why do we mourn departed friends or shrink at deaths alarm Its but the voice that Jesus sends to call them to his arms. The memory of the just is blessed/"
The Blenheim Township Minute Book 1822-1844, records that Walter was a Pathmaster (overseer of highways) for the second concession in 1831, 1832, and 1838 and a pound keeper in 1837 and 1838. Many of the Township laws concerned animals and fences, and the Minute Book included the earmarks which were used to identify the owners of animals. These marks included cropping, slits, notches and holes. Walter Martin's mark, which was a square crop of the right ear with a hole in the same ear, was recorded June 4, 1832.
The Minute book is described at http://www.kipp-blake-families.ca/prnceton.htm
