Greene, Silence
1762 - 1811 (49 years)-
Name Greene, Silence Birth 14 Apr 1762 Coventry, Kent, Rhode Island, [1, 2] Gender Female Relocation Abt 1770 New Britain, Albany, New York [3] When Silence was 8, her family moved west, apparently to New Britain, Albany, New York (now within New Lebanon, Columbia, New York). Relocation Abt 1773 Lanesborough, Berkshire, Massachusetts [4, 5] When Silence was 11, her father bought 100 acres of land in Lanesborough. He sold the land in 1783. Residence 1787 Samuel Martin's Land, Rensselaerville, Albany, New York, USA Samuel and Silence, their brother-in-law Samuel Baker and Josiah Skinner (unrelated) leased lot 147 (164 acres) in the Town of Rensselaerville from Stephen van Rensselaer III, the Patroon of Rensselaerwyck. The pin on the map (below) is the estimated position of the southern boundary of lot 147. Silence's brothers Rowland and Levi Greene, leased lot 166, the adjacent lot to the north. Death 29 May 1811 Blenheim, Oxford, Ontario, Canada Burial Princeton Cemetery, Princeton, Oxford, Ontario, Canada Person ID I28 Martin-Bloom Last Modified 21 Oct 2016
Father Greene, Elder Timothy, b. 14 Jun 1725, West Greenwich, Rhode Island d. Aft 1790 (Age 65 years) Mother Rowland (Rouland) Burlingame, Silence, b. 17 Jul 1729, Dighton, Bristol, Massachusetts d. 1813 (Age 83 years) Marriage 22 Sep 1751 West Greenwich, Rhode Island [6] - Mary Shaw Greene wrote that Silence was a widow from Scituate, Massachusetts without evidence. Arnold's entry for the marriage reads [Greene] "Timothy, of W. Greenwich, and Silence Burlingame, widow, of Scituate; m. at Coventry by Elder James Colvin, Sept, 22 1751". The fact that Scituate is not specifically said to be in Massachusetts, suggests that Silence was from Scituate, Providence County, Rhode Island, as other states are commonly named in these records. [6, 7]
Notes - A record of the births in the Greene family is given in the following, which is a transcription of a copy of a note written by Sarah Mallory Baker, who had copied the original record. In her note Sarah Baker states explicitly that Huldah was the daughter of Elder Timothy Greene. Sarah personally knew Huldah. Mrs. Percy Barker copied Sarah's note and sent it to Maud Martin Latham via Eva Sowden in 1956. My comments in [ ]. Sarah's note said:

This is a true copy from an old record as exact as I could possibly make it - I have endeavored to preserve the quaint old manner of the orthography of a hundred and twenty years ago.
For Thomas Horner and the posterity of my Dear Mother-in-law Mrs Huldah Baker. who was daughter of Elder Timothy Green and Grandmother to the children of Mrs Olive Horner of Burford, W.C.

Documents Historical Marker at the Baptist Church of Preston Hollow
Four members of the Green family and their spouses were almost certainly founding members of this church in 1787 (Silence Green and Samuel Martin, Huldah Green and Samuel Baker, Levi Green and Asenath Robinson, and Rowland Green and Elizabeth Champlain). Elder Timothy Green, their father, was the first pastor of the church (abt 1790).
Headstones Martin, Samuel and Silence Greene
The memorial was a stone box. The inscriptions were on the top (which was cracked) and were badly eroded and sometimes illegible. In addition to Samuel and Silence, the monument also memorialized their son Solomon, who died as a boy, and also their son Elial and his wife Mary and several of their sons.
