Hyde, Captain Walter

-
Name Hyde, Walter [2] - Named in his father's will. [1]
Prefix Captain Birth 17 Feb 1735 Norwich, New London, Connecticut [3]
Christening 23 Feb 1735 Franklin Congregational Church, Franklin, New London, Connecticut [4]
- Formerly the Second Church in Norwich. Record does not name parents.
Gender Male Military Service 1776 Connecticut [5, 6]
Walter was the Captain of an independent company of soldiers who marched to New York City in 1776 in Col. Erastus Woolcot's Regiment where Walter died. A list of the members of his company is here: https://archive.org/details/rollslistsofconn08conn/page/148 Death 18 Sep 1776 Greenwich, Fairfield, Connecticut - There is confusion about the place he died; some sources say Greenwich, New York, some say simply Greenwich, but others say Horseneck. Since Horseneck is a name (now outdated) for a place in Greenwich, Connecticut, I have listed Greenwich, Connecticut as the place he died.
Burial Old Cemetery, Lebanon, New London County, Connecticut [7]
- Walter is honored by two stones in the Old Cemetery, but he is not buried there. His service in the Revolutionary War is recognized by a modern stone and by a cenotaph which reads "This monument is erected in Memory of Capt. Walter Hyde who was of approved integrity, a useful member of Society, a kind husband, an affectionate parent, a lover of his country & a firm Supporter of the rights of Mankind. Exempt from Military duty by former command, he nobly stept forth, raised and took the command of an Independent Company & with them proceeded to the neighbourhood of N. York A.D. 1776 in defence of the invaded rights of the United American States when he died at Greenwich on the 18th day of Sept. 1776 aged 41 years & was there buried & his grave undistinguishable from those of many other strangers. His death was greatly lamented by all to whom he was known."
